Foundation Stage

Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world

Starting school is an important step in every child’s life and here at Wellington Primary School we strive to provide a welcoming and engaging environment that stimulates a love of learning from this early age. The Early Years Foundation Stage is a two-year phase which consists of Foundation Stage One (FS1) and Foundation Stage Two (FS2). The Foundation Stage at WPS has a dedicated indoor and outside learning environment, offering the children a well-equipped range of learning through play opportunities such as sand, water, construction, role play, creative and investigative play areas.

Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS) during this two-year phase. The EYFS is based around seven areas of learning and is built on children engaging in first-hand learning experiences with a very strong emphasis on play and early communication skills. Each class across the Foundation Stage has a full time Teaching Assistant to support the teachers in the delivery of the EYFS curriculum. The teachers provide a stimulating environment that encourages children’s development of learning skills and critical thinking skills.

The individual needs of each child is key to the success in their development throughout the EYFS and is taken into account in both the setup of classrooms and the planning by the teacher. Each teacher plans based on the children’s needs and interests to provide a personalised curriculum through which the children can thrive. We believe that children must have the opportunity to explore and investigate through play both indoors and outdoors. Children should develop independence, from choosing what they play with and how they want to learn to their own self-care. Children also attend weekly PE, Swimming, Music and Arabic lessons.

In the Foundation Stage children begin their journey into the community of WPS by taking part in whole-school events and celebrations such as Book Week, the International Fair, STEAM Week and school performances. These opportunities provide children with real life learning opportunities that help in developing a well-rounded child ready to progress in their learning journey at WPS.

The Foundation Stage has its own dedicated building as well as its own outdoor teaching and play areas. This ensures a safe, secure and supportive environment where your child can grow, develop and learn.
