At GWPS there are 2 well stocked libraries that are able to cater specifically for the different age ranges within the school. We have both a KS1 library and a KS2 library. We are fortunate to have a full time dedicated librarian who is on hand to teach children how to use a library and to offer support with suitable books.
FS students are provided with the opportunity to use the library facilities once a week with their TAs to pick their own books. We are trying as much as we can to teach them the main library concepts and rules.
Y1s upwards come up to the library at least once a week to select books, learn library skills, browse or read; providing an opportunity for students to develop an appreciation for books. Our aim is to encourage unlimited reading books so students; especially, older ones can pop up at any time to exchange their books during the week.
As we have students’ and staff loan category, we also have Parents loan category. We are aware that parents are the best choosers for their children and so encourage parents to be involved in their childs’ reading. Parents are most welcome to come and get registered on our system to be able to make their own choice of books for their children.
Due to the software used to catalogue all books in both libraries students and staff members can browse and make their own search of library books from their laptops or school lab computers.
Students are encouraged to develop their choice of reading material with different classes writing “Book Reviews” which are assembled on boards to provide other students and visitors with inspiration for their next read .
